Canada Place at Canary Wharf

London, England

Design Thinking: In a prime location on Canary Wharf, this five-storey retail mixed-use building faces Canary Wharf’s main landmark tower, One Canada Square. Canada Place terminates the retail mall that runs underground along the main axis of Canary Wharf. A variety of tenants act as a major anchor destination for the mall including a health club and restaurants. A four-storey atrium space extends to the concourse level and links the mall with the upper retail levels.

Key Features: The building is entirely clad with various types of glass ranging from clear structural glazing and fritted opaque panels, to recycled glass gravel used on a colourful roof garden. Two façades are designed as undulating glass sculptures that integrate theatrical lighting for night time display. Bridge design technology was used extensively to achieve a minimal structure. In the context of its immediate neighbours, 15- to 46-storey office towers, the “fifth elevation” roof plan was a critical design consideration.
